Phung Huynh discusses the ideas and inspirations behind the making of her new body of work, American Braise. This sculptural installation, with varied formations of souvenir-esque mementos and play toys, is a deeply personal retelling of the artist’s childhood and family’s journey on “being made in America”.

Recounting the profound experiences, recent work, and mentors growing up, Huynh describes her interest in unpacking her childhood and family’s experiences as refugees living in the United States. Through the use of snow globes, photographs, and G.I. Joe figurines, Huynh plays with the idea of remembrance—from her subconscious memory, family narratives, community members, Vietnam War monuments, Hollywood film depictions, and educational institutions—and the asymmetrical disconnect in how traumatic experiences are contextualized and continue to be perpetuated today. Over twenty years in the making, American Braise reclaims Huynh and her family’s lived experiences of oppression as a story of resilience, one that can inspire viewers to “rethink their relationship to their own communities and what kind of impact they can make.”

Phung Huynh (b. 1977, Vietnam, she/her) works in drawing, painting and public art to explore cultural perception and representation. Huynh has had solo exhibitions at Sam Lee Gallery in Los Angeles, Gagosian Gallery in Beverly Hills, and the Sweeney Art Gallery at the University of California, Riverside. She has also completed public art commissions for the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro Orange Line, Metro Silver Line, and Metro Neighborhood Poster Series) and the Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens. Huynh is currently Professor of Art at Los Angeles Valley College.
