  • This sculpture by Miyoshi Barosh is a large-scale, fiber-based work consisting of a collage of large bulbous forms engaged in a suggested downward movement and leaving a strand or trail behind along the wall. The surface treatment of the artwork is a multi-layered attachment of these forms. Most forms visible here are uniquely designed with pattern-like shapes, lines, grids, colors, and more. The overall color scheme present is that of a traditional rainbow, utilizing tints, tones, and shades of these colors. The artwork also exists on the wall plane but reaches down and out onto the floor plane and into the exhibition space.
  • This large scale photographic print by Barbara Strasen presents a collage-like render of forms, figures, objects, lines, and more. The piece is overwhelmingly energized with notions of movement, activity, and color. Some familiar imagery depicted here is tires or wheels, architectural columns and classical plinths, fabrics, and the impressions of cityscapes. In front of the image is an individual, physically blurred by the engagement of motion. walking in form the left edge of the image and towards the right.
  • This installation view of the COLA 2015 exhibition features five artworks by Jeff Colson. There is one in the foreground, three in the middle ground, and one in the background. The foreground artwork includes a table-like structure fabricated by the use of two general-purpose utility crates, one yellow and one blue, and a large sheet of conjoined wooden planks. Resting atop the sheet is a dense pile of wood chunks. In the middle ground, from left to right, is a tall entry table that has been treated with an opaque light blue pigment. Atop the surface is a pile of wood chunks adhered together. The manner in which they adhere provides parts of the form to protrude out and onto the surface and therefore elevating the piece. To the right is a plinth-like furniture object treated with an opaque white pigment upholding a dense mass of adhered wood chunks. The wood chunks in this piece have been treated with colorful but opaque and highly desaturated pigments. The last artwork in the midground includes a shorter plinth-like furniture piece treated with an opaque pastel green pigment. Atop the surface of this artwork is an opaque yellow or tan form made of adhered wood chunks. The artwork in the background includes a larger cabinet-like furniture piece upholding a much more cubic form of wood chunks. The chunks have been treated with a multitude of mostly darker green pigments altered in their tints, tones, and shades. This form contains four fragile and small protrusions at the bottom that elevate it above the surface it stands on.
  • This artwork by Elizabeth Leister shows a documented capture of the performance artwork. In this image, two individuals are present, one in the background gestured towards a gallery wall and video projection and the other gestured towards the viewer. The background individual faces the rear gallery wall in a walking motion. The individual raises their arm up and out towards the projection. The projection itself is a render of the individual in the foreground. Captured and reshown by a camera, not in view, the video projection in the background is a mirror image of the actions and movements engaged by the foregrounded individual. The foregrounded individual stands on one foot and their left arm raised. Spine arched backward, their head is tilted up and back to the gallery ceiling and lights above while their left leg is raised and bent at the knee.
  • This sculpture by Jeff Colson is a medium-sized, wood-based consisting of a multitude of rectangular shapes that have been adhered together and treated with paint. The pigments seen here are colorful but rendered very opaquely and desaturated.

City of Los Angeles (COLA) Individual Artist Fellowship Exhibition

Awarded annually by DCA, the COLA Fellowships support the creation of new works by a selection of the City’s most exemplary mid-career artists. The COLA exhibition honors these creative visionaries and nurtures the symbiotic relationship between Los Angeles, its artists, its history, and its identity as an international arts capital.
