  • This photograph by Rika Ohara features an aerial shot depicting a pomegranate fruit severed in half. The severed fruit rests on top of a dense bed of long black hair.
  • This installation image of the COLA 2012 exhibition features twelve visible wall-works and one large sculpture. The wall-works on the left gallery wall are mounted side-by-side. The artwork on the background wall is a large landscape-oriented image toned grey in pigment. Along the right wall are six more wall-works. From left to right: two small grey images mounted side-by-side, one large black image with a white circle in the center resembling an eye-like form, and finally two more small works side-by-side one grey and the other colorful and gesturing a render as a portrait. Within the space here is the sculptural work consisting of a make-shift table suspending a crate-like object filled with a black mass.
  • This installation by the artist Mark Steven Greenfield features two framed paintings. Both artworks are toned beige or tan in overall color value and include renditions of fieldscapes. The left image contains a render of foliage or grounds and an anthropomorphic figure protruding out in the distance. The figure here is similar to a common scarecrow. The right image contains a similar fieldscape rendered more as foliage than grounds. Off-centered in the artwork is a tall individual or anthropomorphic creature with long ears wearing a formal ensemble and holding a linear object in their left hand. This object contains a circle towards the tip that gestures an energetic presence.
  • This sculptural installation by Steve Hurd includes five tall facades of architectural structures with stone, castle-like resemblances. The surface of these facades has been treated with a heavy coating of pigmented gestures and impressions. Utilizing dark tones and shades of colors, the artwork renders three-dimensionally off the surface of the two-dimensional surfaces within the exhibition space.

City of Los Angeles (COLA) Individual Artist Fellowship Exhibition

Awarded annually by DCA, the COLA Fellowships support the creation of new works by a selection of the City’s most exemplary mid-career artists. The COLA exhibition honors these creative visionaries and nurtures the symbiotic relationship between Los Angeles, its artists, its history, and its identity as an international arts capital.

 

Featured artists include: Lynne Berman, Martin Durazo, Heather Flood, Diane Gamboa, Mark Steven Greenfield, Steve Hurd, Joseph Mattson (literary artist), Maryose Mendoza, Rika Ohara, Paul Outlaw (performing artist), Raphael Xavier (performing artist).
