Dia de los Muertos altar with skulls, photos and books.

Ofrenda on Olive Hill

Friday, November 4 and Saturday, November 5 from 11-3 PM PST

Detail of a Dia de los Muertos altar with skulls and books.

In collaboration between the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs’ Barnsdall Junior Arts Center (BJAC), Barnsdall Arts Center (BAC) and Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery (LAMAG), join us for the BJAC and BAC’s annual Día de los Muertos installation and celebration. On view at LAMAG from November 4 and 5 from 11–3 PM PST, the altar will feature banners of remembrance created and contributed by participants from the BJAC and BAC Banners of Remembrance Art Outdoor Workshop along with offerings and objects traditional to Día de los Muertos.

The Día de los Muertos installation and celebration at BJAC and BAC has become a beloved annual tradition for the communities in and around Barnsdall Art Park to come together and celebrate the lives of those we have lost by honoring them through artmaking. Even at the peak of COVID-19 last year, the BJAC and BAC continued this special event by transforming the BJAC and BAC breezeway into a Wall of Remembrance that embraced what our art community and families were going through at the time.

In alignment with LAMAG’s mission of responding to the human experience, the first collaboration between BAC, BJAC and LAMAG for Día de los Muertos is a special opportunity to further transform spaces in and around Barnsdall Art Park as spaces for artmaking, healing and celebration as we come together to honor those we have lost in our City of Los Angeles family and local communities.
